Personal Effects Customs Clearance for Australia

When shipping personal effects to Australia, it’s important to follow the country’s customs regulations to ensure a smooth delivery.

Declared Value
For shipments under 100kg, the declared value should reflect the used resale value of your goods, not their new replacement value. For shipments over 100kg, the goods should also be valued based on their used resale value. However, declaring a value below $1000 AUD may result in delays as customs might flag the shipment as undervalued. Shipments with a declared value over $1000 AUD may require formal customs clearance.

Quarantine & Biosecurity
Australia enforces strict biosecurity measures. Items such as food, wooden products, or anything in contact with plants or animals may be subject to quarantine by Australia Border Force. Approximately 20 out of every 1000 shipments are selected for quarantine. To avoid quarantine delays, clean and disinfect items such as hiking boots, sports equipment, or tools that have been in contact with soil, plants, or animals, and clearly label all items on your packing list. If your items are quarantined, you may be required to pay a quarantine fee of around A$120.

Documents Required

  • Passport: A copy of the consignee’s passport details page is necessary.
  • Customs Form: A B534 form must be completed for personal effects clearance into Australia.
  • Flight Information: The consignee must provide their flight number, port, and date of arrival on the B534 Customs form.

General Personal Effects Information
Personal effects are considered used items that have been in the sender’s possession for at least six months. Shipping new or commercial items may prevent your shipment from being classified as personal effects, potentially leading to additional duties. To demonstrate that your shipment contains personal effects, provide a detailed packing list, e.g., “5 x Cotton Dresses, 2 x Jeans, 3 x Pair of Gloves” instead of vague descriptions like “10 x Used Clothing.”

Shipping Gifts to Australia
Australia allows gifts up to a value of $1000 AUD to enter the country duty-free. If the total value of multiple gifts exceeds this limit, duty and taxes will apply. All shipments, including gifts, are subject to inspection by Australian Border Force.

Customs Clearance Time
Most shipments will clear customs without issues. However, shipments that are flagged for reasons like missing documents or inspections may be delayed. Typically, shipments requiring customs inspection are cleared within one working day after resolving any queries. Shipments subject to quarantine may take up to 10 working days for clearance.

  13. Food & Beverages: Perishable goods, dairy products, meat, fish, nuts, seeds, and alcoholic beverages like wine or champagne.
  14. Other Restricted Items:
    • Prescription drugs and pharmaceuticals.
    • Religious artefacts.
    • Valuables like jewellery, antiques, and precious stones (shipped at the owner’s risk).
